Chapter VI

On the Spot

THE Green Lama, still clicking his prayer wheel, arose from the floor and crossed the room to the telephone. He gave the hotel operator a number he wanted. When his party answered, he talked for several minutes, asking several questions and then hung up. He picked up his briefcase from the table, made sure that the green robe was in it, and let himself out of his room.

Parked around the corner from the hotel was a small coupé which the Green Lama had rented that afternoon. It was difficult for him to get around as the Green Lama in cabs, so he usually rented a car. He climbed into the coupé, started the motor and headed the car toward Beverly Hills.

His first stop was a block away from the large home of Morris Goldman. He opened the briefcase and put on the green robe, pulling the hood over his head, and adjusting the red Kata67 around his neck inside.

When he stepped from the car, the robe helped him to blend with the shadows and become almost invisible. It would have taken a sharp eye to catch him except when he moved into the direct rays of a street lamp.

It took him only a few minutes to ascertain that none of the suspects were at Goldman’s house. He moved silently back to his car and drove on.

Within the next hour he visited the homes of Gloria DeVore, Curtiss James and Walter Parker. He was looking for nothing definite, but merely checking up on all the people involved. He found nothing to arouse his suspicions.

His next stop was at the house of Peter Koutsonikolis, the director. He stopped the car a half block away and slipped silently toward the house. He had reached the edge of the huge lawn when he stopped suddenly and stepped back of a tree and stood motionless. Another car had just pulled up on the other side of the house, parking a hundred yards away, and a figure was striding toward the house.

As the man reached the lawn, he skirted it and went around toward the rear of the house. But as he had turned in, the Green Lama had caught a glimpse of his face and recognized it. The man was one of those who had been on the Venice beach that morning, making a pretense of photographing a girl in a red bathing suit.

For a moment the Green Lama contemplated following the man, but then decided to wait there and get him when he came out. This was his first real break. He hadn’t suspected those other cameramen, but seeing one of them contacting Koutsonikolis threw a different light on it.

The front door opened and some one came out of the house and walked down the sidewalk, past the Green Lama, with clicking heels. The Green Lama suppressed an exclamation of surprise as he recognized the brunette beauty whom Morris Goldman had just “discovered”—Sigrid Moore. He was tempted to follow her, but decided the man would be more important.
